"Maa Aschen" ... finally here arrives the most awaited moment of every year .. yes the "Durga Puja". Festive season is on the rush now, traditions and rituals are all excited to welcome Maa Durga. Being born and brought up in West Bengal I really feel lucky and blessed to be part of Bengal's Durga Pujo. So, just trying to take you on the small but really meaningful and special trip and glimpse of Durga Puja, its traditions, values, culture, art talent, unlimited design treat for your eyes and soul.
"Mahalaya" It all starts with the great mahalaya day. Day when the eyes of Maa Durga is being painted (on Maa Durga' Idols) during the early morning time under the light of "diya's" (traditional candles). Here we all welcome Maa to our cities to bless us forever. It's not just the making of Maa Durga's eyes but it is the significance of Maa's arrival. It is something which gives life to us. It is something which gives 10 days of continuous celebrations, festival, prayers and traditions.
Designing of pandal's interior is dam so marvelous, amazing and fabulous. Each and every corner, each and every inch is being ornate in such a beautiful traditional manner that it brings in the life to the pandal's design. After all it's not just a pandal for us, its a home for Maa Durga for the next upcoming ten days.
Right from the floor to ceiling, walls to back drop of Maa Durga's idol everything is being taken such a good care with intricate carving, designs, traditional styling and authentic work that no one wishes to go back home once you visit a pandal.
Finally after the joyful and curious journey here comes the moment we all wait for year long.. Maa Durga's Idol. I have no words to explain the creativity and the creation. It seems Maa Durga is between us in real. You won't be able to control the smiling tears in your eyes, glow on your face and amazed expression which comes from within as soon as we get the "Dharshan of Maa Durga's Idol" in each and every pandal. With tears in the eyes, joint hands one can't take off their eyes from Maa's face and idol's.
Nothing can be more beautiful, auspicious, wonderful and amazing than the Durga Puja Pandals, Idols, festive environment. Its a pleasureful treat for the soul of designing, for the people who live for their culture, it's an absolute flavor of prayers, positivity dipped in the rituals of traditions, unity and art of Bengal.
With the nine days of auspicious puja, festive rush, traditional designing, food, fun and positive environment comes the last day of puja. Bidding goodbye is always tough but if done in style and with traditional rituals it automatically becomes fun and a memory to cherish all your life. Yaa the last day of Durga Puja is celebrated as "Vijoy Dashmi". Its a significance of Maa Durga's win over the demon "Mahisaasur". Celebrated in traditional ritual called "Sindoor khela". All the married ladies bid goodbye to Maa Durga by offering sindoor and sweets to her with the hope wishes and happiness of "asche bochor aabaar hobe" (for the upcoming year we are all set with the spirits of celebrating the puja all over and again).
Ten days of festival might get over with the passing time and hours but the spirits and happiness never gets over. It is always cherished in mind, soul and heart. After all it's not just a puja for us its a lifetime celebrations and memories of auspicious days spent under the roof of design, traditions, prayers and blessings of "Maa Durga".
