Lesson 7 - Bedroom Design Guidelines.

Earlier we had a talk about residence designing and guidelines.. now its time to understand different important zones of residence which needs special attention to be designed and few factors to be taken care of while putting in your efforts to make your interiors looks better and achieve your parts of dreams. 
Important zones of ...  residence are .. 

• Master bedroom / bedroom
• Kids room 
• Living Room
• Kitchen 
• Dinning room 
• Puja room
• Bathroom 
• Varanda - outer space
• Landscaping if any 

Hmm... lots of topics to discuss about ..right... ! Lets start with " Master - Bedroom" or "Bedroom"..

As we all the know .. bedroom is the most private and relaxing zone of any occupants of the residence..therefore it is very important to make proper placement and planning of bedroom. Large proportion of bedroom floor area is covered by furniture. Windows and doors account for a large percentage of walls and partition spaces & proper location of doors , windows and closets are important. Aside from sleeping bedroom is the center of dressing and undressing activities,so privacy factor is the most important of all. Apart from all these an inter-relation exists between dressing  storage of cloths , bedroom requirement  covers and cloths etc. so ample of space is required for storage.

All the measurements are in (feet & inches)

Minimum Bedroom size : 10'-0" X 12'0" in exclusive of closets.
Master Bedroom size : 12'0" X 16'0" in exclusive of closets.

• A master bedroom should at-least accommodate the following : 
• One double bed : 6'0" X 7'0" or 6'0" X 6'6"  or
• Two single bed : 3'6" X 6'6" 
• One or two chairs : 1'6" X 1'6" X 3'0"
• Center table : 2'0" X 2'6"
• Ample storage space is essential 
• At-least one cloth closets.
• For master bedroom at-least 5'0" X 2'0" X 6'0" wardrobe
• For secondary room at-least 3'0" X 2"0" X 5'0" wardrobe
• At-least one - half the closet floor shall be level and not more than 12" above floor of the adjacent room.

Furniture Clearance : 

• 42" at one side or foot of bed.
• 6" for dressing between side of bed and side of dressing or chest.

Furniture Arrangement :

• Location of door 36" in front of dresser , closet and chest of drawer.
• 24" for major circulation path.
• 22" on one side of bed for circulation.
• 12" on least used side of double bed.

Now, how about the perfect bedroom location ... while preparing plan of a residence.. hmm..think think... not that difficult..its just few consideration for a perfect placement :

• Zoned away from social & work zones.
• Accessed directly from the hall.
• Accessible to bathrooms without obstruction. 
• Household composition may determine location.

For privacy and sound control.. one should take these steps 

• Zoning within houses.
• Location in relation to external sources
• Buffer between rooms
• Sound proofing. 

Now comes the size and layout of the bedrooms.. now that depends upon 

• Person's lifestyle.
• Personal choices.
• Number of occupants in a room.
• Expected activities.
• Types and dimension of furniture.
• Windows and doors placement.
